HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 26 (acn) Cuba defeated Turkey in the final match for group B of the 19th Men's U21 World Volleyball Championship, which takes place in the Czech cities of Brno and Ceske Budejovice.
According to the tournament website, Cubans won 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-7) in a hard-fought game.
The Caribbean offensive was led by Miguel Gutierrez, top scorer of the match with 24 points, who was followed by Miguel Lopez (21), Osniel Melgarejo (18) and Javier Concepción (11).
Adis Gagumdzija (19), Abdullah Cam (13) and Avci Batuhan (10) highlighted for the losing side.
This was Cuba´s second win, as they lost 0-3 (30-32, 17-25 and 14-25) to Russia, and beat 3-0 (25-23, 25-19 and 25-20) United States.
Russia headed group B with balance of 3 wins and no loss, escorted by Cuba (2-1), Turkey (1-2) and USA (0-3).
Thus, Russians and Cubans qualify to the second round which features two new groups (E and F).
Poole E includes China, Cuba, Iran and Poland, while Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Russia appear in Poole F.
The best two squads of each of these pooles will advance to semifinals on July 1st and the winners will fight for the title a day later, while the losers will do it for the bronze medal that same day.
