HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 23 (acn) Cuba lost in its debut today against Russia on the opening day of the 19th FIVB U21 Men's Volleyball World Championship, which runs until July 2 in the Czech cities of Brno and Ceske Budejovice.
According to the website of the contest, Russia, defending champion, won 3-0 (32-30, 25-17 and 25-14).
Russian Anton Semyshev was the MVP of the match by scoring 19 points and was seconded by Aleksei Kanonov (11) and Dmitri Yakolev (11), while Cuba's best scorers were Osniel Melgarejo (11) and Miguel Gutierrez (11).
Cuba´s other rivals in group B are United States and Turkey, whom they´ll face on Saturday and Sunday at the DRFG Arena in Brno.
Also today, Poland beat 3-0 Morocco, Argentina defeated 3-0 Ukraine and China won 3-1 over Japan in Pooles A,C and D respectively.
The best two teams of each group will be split into two further pooles (E and F) of four and subsequently, the top two sides will advance to semifinals and final.
