Dominican Republic beats Cuba in Pan American Women's Volleyball Cup

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 21 (acn) Cuba lost to the Dominican Republic in the fourth and penultimate day for group B of the 16th edition of the Pan American Women's Volleyball Cup, at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum in Lima, Peru, and today they will face Trinidad and Tobago.

After beating 3-1 Canada, losing 1-3 to the hosts and defeating 3-0 Chile, Cubans were beaten by the current champions of the event 3-0 (25-16, 25- 17 and 25-20), in just an hour and nine minutes.
The scoring leader of the match was Cuban Heidy Casanova, with 14 points, while Elizabeth Martinez (13) and Jeneiry Martinez (11) excelled for the winners.
In the other two games of group B, Trinidad and Tobago, and Canada won 3-0 and 3-2 over Chile and Peru, respectively.
Meanwhile, Colombia, United States and Puerto Rico beat 3-0, 3-0 and 3-1 Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina, in that order, in Poole A.
Today's program also includes the games Chile-Canada, Peru-DR, Venezuela-Puerto Rico, Colombia-Mexico and Argentina-United States.
The DR leads Group B undefeated in four outings, followed by Peru (3-1), Cuba and Canada (2-2), Trinidad and Tobago (1-3) and Chile (0-4), while in Poole A, USA (4-0) tops the standings escorted by Argentina and Puerto Rico (3-1), Venezuela and Colombia (1-3) and Mexico (0-4).
The leaders of each poole directly advance to semifinals while the teams ranking second and third will go to quarterfinals for getting their tickets to semis.
Cuba won the first version of this contest in 2002 and repeated in 2004, 2005 and 2007, while Americans did it in 2003, 2012, 2013 and 2015, Dominicans triumphed in 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2016, and Brazilians, who do not participate now, were the champions in 2006, 2009 and 2011.
