HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 1 (acn) The young Cuban ballplayer Julio Pablo Martinez will soon sign his contract with the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League.
Martinez will travel to Canada alongside the Cuban baseball team that will play for the second time in the Can-Am, from next June 9, with a schedule of 21 matches in that independent circuit, which also includes a squad from the Dominican Republic.
Baseball is the sport with the greatest presence of Cuban athletes abroad, with 18 players distributed in Canada, Japan and Italy, a figure that will rise to 19 after Martinez to sign his contract.
Almost half a hundred Cuban athletes of seven sports, such as baseball, handball, basketball, cycling, wrestling, soccer and softball, have contracts in 11 countries, in a process that shows a growing trend in the Caribbean island, covered by legal norms and under the principle of the protection of athletes.
