PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Apr 12 (acn) Andrés Gonzalez, Pinar del Río head coach, dreamed since the beginning of the Cuban Men´s Superior Basketball League (LSB by its Spanish acronym) qualifying stage with achieving the first crown for his team, and he met his desires by defeating Matanzas in the sixth game of the grand final at the 19 de Noviembre multipurpose room.
The local side won the series 4-2 when beating Matanzas 63-53 in this sixth game of the title discussion.
Point guard Osmel Oliva was the man of the match by scoring 24 points and was also a key figure in the final as he contributed with 101 units to the triumph of his squad.
Oliva was also chosen as the MVP of the LSB by the Cuban national basketball federation.
The All-Stars team of the tournament included Andy Boffil and Yoel Cubillas (both from Villa Clara), Yosiel Monterry (Pinar del Rio), Yuniskel Molina (Matanzas) and Esteban Martinez (Santiago).
Gonzalez, debutant as coach at the LSB, said that the unity, good choice of reinforcements and their rapport with the dynamics of the franchise were some of the decisive aspects for the success.
Thus, Pinar del Rio got their first scepter in LSB, while Matanzas equalized their performance of the 2005-06 season when they were beaten by Ciego de Avila and Villa Clara ranked third.
