HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 29 (acn) Cuba defeated Costa Rica in the first day of the Women´s U18 Pan American Volleyball Cup, with headquarters until next April 2 at Havana´s Sports City Coliseum, and will face Colombia today.
As expected, Cubans won 3-0 (25-13, 25-7 and 25-13), showing superiority in all game aspects.
The statistics also reflect higher quality of the locals, with favorable balance in the attack (66-11), blocking (10-0) and service (10-0), while the visitors were better (19-22) in opponents errors.
Cuba´s leading scorers were Ailama Cese (15), Elizabeth Vicet (11) and Evilania Martinez (11), while Isayana Soto (7) highlighted for the losing side.
In the other games of this first day, Chile beat 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 25-16 and 18-16) Puerto Rico, in group A, while the Dominican Republic won 3-0 (25-14, 25-9 and 25-14) over Uruguay, and Mexico surpassed 3-0 (25-15, 25-8 and 25-12) Guatemala in Pool C.
Today´s program also includes the games Chile-Argentina (A) and Uruguay-Mexico and Guatemala-DR (C).
As scheduled, the three tickets in contention for the world cup, from August 18 to 27 in the Argentine cities of La Fe and Rosario, will be for the two best teams in North, Central America and the Caribbean (NORCECA) and the side with the best results from South America.
Eight out of the 10 participating teams will fight for the tickets, as Argentina (South America) and the Dominican Republic (NORCECA) are already qualified.
