HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 8 (acn) The three-time Olympic champion Mijain Lopez (130 kilos) leads the Cuban teams that are training to attend the Pan American Championship, which will host Brazil from May 5 to 7.
Lopez, also owner of five world titles in Greco-Roman style, will look for his tenth crown in this type of continental contests.
In addition to Lopez, it highlights the presence of Ismael Borrero (59), winner of the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, and monarch of the planet in Las Vegas 2015.
Yasmany Lugo (98), runner-up in the summer event last year, also stands out in the Cuban Greco-Roman style team.
According to JIT sports publication, the freestyle wrestlers training are, among others, Yowlys Bonne (57), Alejandro Valdés (65), as well as Liván López (74) and Reineris Salas (97), the latter two have been several times medalists in universal competitions.
Likewise, the women´s squad includes the experienced Yakelín Stornel (60) and Yudaris Sánchez (69), and the young athlete Lienna de la Caridad Montero (55).
Luis de la Portilla, national wrestling commissioner, said that in 2017 there will be tough competitions in the international arena, such as the World Championships, to be hosted by Paris, France, from August 21 to 26.
He also mentioned as another important commitment the World Cup in which the Greco-Roman team must compete from March 16 and 17, in Iran.
