HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 7 (acn) Cuba won a silver medal in the women's sabre team event, in the penultimate competitive day of the Pan American Cadet and Youth Fencing Championship, held in Havana´s Spots City Coliseum.
The Cuban women´s youth team had an amazing performance though they lost in the final 43-45 to Mexico.
On their way to the final, the Caribbean quartet, made up by Yanet Batista, Milagros Portuondo, Leidis Maris Veranes and Sulema Vinent, beat three rivals, including the United States.
They had an easy debut against Argentines, whom they defeated 45-32, then, in the next round, they won 45-37 over Americans; while in semifinals they beat Venezuela 45-26.
Meanwhile, United States won the gold medals in the women´s team epee, and the men´s team foil events, in both cases over Canada.
The locals also ranked seventh in the women´s team epee; while the men´s team foil could not advance to quarterfinals when losing 38-45 to Venezuela in the round of 16.
Individually, Cuba´s best performance was achieved by Yordano Suarez, bronze medalist in the cadet epee event, and he also ranked second in the youth contest of that same weapon.
In addition, Hansel Julian Rodriguez reached a bronze medal in the men´s individual sabre event.
