HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 9 (acn) Cubans Lazaro Blanco, William Saavedra and Carlos Benítez were included in the All-Star team of the Caribbean Baseball Series won by Puerto Rico´s Caguas Criollos who beat 1-0 the local side of the Mexicali Aguilas.
The news did not dispel the frustration that prevailed in the Granma Alazanes due to their defeat in semifinals at the hands of the local side, but was well received by the members of their roster, winner in three of the four matches of the qualifying stage.
Blanco, right-handed pitcher, allowed only one earned run in 13 and a third innings in his performances against the Licey Tigres (Dominican Republic) and the Mexicali Aguilas (Mexico), matches in which he achieved a win and a loss respectively.
First baseman Saavedra averaged .375 in the qualifying phase and became the first Cuban hitting two homers after the return of the Caribbean island to this contest, while second baseman Benitez lived his international consecration by hitting .538 and defensively shine in that stage.
