HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 2 (acn) Carlos Martí, manager of Granma, team representing Cuba in the Caribbean Baseball Series, held in Culiacan city, Mexico, said that winning the first game is very important in the aspirations to advance in the event.
Cuba beat 4-0 the Dominican Republic in the opening game of the 59 th Caribbean Series, with win to Lazaro Blanco and excellent relief by lefty Livan Moinelo.
The tournament is based at the Bancomer stadium, home of the Culiacan Tomateros, and brings together, in addition to the aforementioned teams, sides from Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the hosts.
In a press release, Martí noted that the win over the Dominican Licey Tigres, breaks the streak of three consecutive losses in the first game by a Cuban squad in the Caribbean Series, which they attend for the fourth time in the status of guest country.
The Licey Tigres are a very strong rival, because they are the leading winners in the history of these tournaments with 10 crowns, but as I stated in recent days, we have an excellent pitching staff, said the experienced Cuban head coach.
With this performance, Lazaro Blanco confirms he is still in a superb form, after he finished as leader in wins (14), ERA (1.93) and shutouts (3) in the regular season of the Cuban National Series.
This is my second win over a Dominican team, the first was in the Pan American Games, I made emphasis in my control and alternated breaking balls with changeups, said Blanco.
Cubans rest today, so they will train to face on Friday the Caguas Criollos, from Puerto Rico.
