Defending champion takes lead 3-2 in Cuban baseball semi-finals

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 10 (acn) Ciego de Avila took a very important step to reach the final of the 56th Cuban National Baseball Series after beating 8-1 Villa Clara and now leads 3-2 their semifinal playoff.

The current monarchs took the lead in the second inning when outfielder Abdel Civil blasted a two-run homer off the loser Freddy A. Alvarez who also allowed nine hits.

The win went to Vladimir Garcia who only surrendered three hits in seven innings but faced too many complications due to his lack of control as he gave away six walks.

Villa Clara came close in the bottom of the eighth when scoring once off reliever Vladimir Baños, but the visitors scored six runs in the ninth thanks to a costly error, a walk with the bases loaded and a grand slam by outfielder Yoelvis Fiss, all-time leader of this stat in postseason.

Closer Jose Angel Garcia earned his 17th save of the season, leader.
Both sides travel today to Ciego de Avila to decide there the one advancing to the grand finale.
