HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 22 (acn) Felix Savon, Cuban three-time Olympic champion, is among the stars recognized with the status of Legends of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) on the 70th anniversary of that entity.
The also six-time universal monarch in the 91 kg division was included in a luxury quartet made up by Ukrainian Vladimir Klitschko, Indian Mary Kom and Frenchman Brahim Asloum.
The announcement was made in the Swiss city of Montreux and was conceived in
honor to the personalities and talents that have honored the sport, the AIBA statement says.
When celebrating this milestone is important to remember those figures and personalities that continue inspiring thousands of boxers through their integrity, dedication and achievements, stated Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA president, in an evening where the legacy of the American superheavyweight star Muhammad Ali was awarded the AIBA Greats prize.
The gala also welcomed the proclamation of the most outstanding exponents of this sport in 2016, where the Cuba Domadores led the teams involved in the 6th World Series of Boxing, event they won with marked superiority.
Cuba also won another award through light heavyweight Osvary Morell, gold medalist and chosen as best athlete in the World Youth Championship held at the Russian city of St. Petersburg.
The distinction of the best boxers of the season went to Uzbek light flyweight Hasanboy Dusmatov and British flyweight Nicola Adams, Olympic champions in Rio de Janeiro in the men´s and women´s event respectively.
Indian middleweight Krishan Vikas earned the trophy as the most prominent boxer of the professional circuit of AIBA (APB) and Billy Walsh was elected as best coach of the season.
