HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 24 (acn) Four Cubans out of six won bronze medals yesterday at the Youth World Boxing Championship which runs until Saturday in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The wins were achieved by light flyweight Jorge Griñán, flyweight Elio Crespo, light heavyweight Osvary Morell and cruiser Dainier Peró, cadet universal monarch.
The Caribbean team now has balance of 18 wins and 5 losses and tied with United States, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan as the most represented among the 19 squads that will have presence in the semifinals today.
The organizing committee website reported that Griñán beat 4-1 (30-27, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28, 30-27) Ukrainian Oleg Chulyasheyev and Crespo won 3-2 (29-28, 29- 28, 29-28, 28-29, 28-29) over Azeri Aidos Arapov.
Morell defeated 5-0 (30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27) American Christian Montano and Peró won by the same verdict (30-27, 30-27, 30-27 , 30-25, 30-27) over Polish Kamil Offman.
The losses went to light welterweight Damien Lescay and welterweight Isamy Mesa, victims 1-4 (28-29, 28-29, 29-28, 28-29, 27-30) of Turkish Erdemir Tugrulhan and 2-3 (29-28, 28-29, 28-29, 28-29, 29-28) of Venezuelan Andrés Hernández, respectively.
Today will be a resting day, while semifinals will take place tomorrow and the grand final will be a day later.
