HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 9 (acn) Cuban GM Leinier Domínguez kept his pace and contributed with half a unit to the triumph of the Mednyi Vsadnik over the SV Werder Brenen at the 32nd European Chess Club Cup, in Novi Sad, Serbia.
Dominguez (2 736 Elo points) drew with Dutch GM Jan Werle (2 551) in 75 moves of a Nimzo-Indian defense, but had to face a competitor who had a slight advantage over almost
the entire game.
After this result, the Caribbean player now totals 1.5 points in two outings, because he rested the first day, and his team amounts six units and shares the top of the standings with four other sides.
The 4.5-1.5 victory of the Mednyi Vsadnik included wins of Russians Peter Svidler and Vladimir Fedoseev and Chinese Xiangzhi Bu in the boards one, six and four, plus draws by Dominguez (2), Russian Vitiugov (3) and Israeli Maxim Rodshtein (5).
The other squads accumulating three wins are the Zhiguli, Alkaloid, Syberia and VSK Sveto Nikolaj Srpski, all with well known players in their ranks.
The Alkaloid is defended in its first boards by Chinese Ding Liren (2764) and Russians Dmitry
Andreikin (2736) and Pavel Eljanov (2741); the Syberia is represented by the former Russian world champion Vladimir Kramnik (2817), Dutch Anish Giri (2756) and Russian Alexander Grischuk (2752); while Azeri Shakriyar Mamedyarov (2762), Russian Alexander Morozevich (2683) and Hungarian Richard Rapport (2729) play for the VSK, the latter is Dominguez´s rival today.
