Holguin snaps Matanzas winning streak in Cuban baseball

Holguin snaps Matanzas winning streak in Cuban baseballHAVANA, Cuba, Nov 7 (acn) Matanzas was unable to extend its winning streak of 19 consecutive games in the 56th National Baseball Series when losing to Holguín, result with which both teams matched their particular series played at Victoria de Girón stadium.

The "Crocodiles" had to settle for breaking the record of consecutive wins of their province, previously in possession of Citricultores (18) in the 1983-84 season, but they failed to reach the national record set by Mineros in 1972, with 27 wins in line.
Holguin won 3-0 mainly thanks to the excellent performances of the starting pitcher Carlos Alberto Santiesteban, winner of the match when allowing only three hits and now with balance of 7 wins and 4 losses, and reliever from Pinar del Rio, Liván Moinelo, who earned the save (3), while Joel Suarez (0-1) took the loss.
In another of the afternoon matches, Granma also tied the subseries against Camaguey after beating them 5- 1 at Candido Gonzalez Park.
Lazaro Blanco got his eighth win of the Cuban championship, while Arbelio Quiroz (4-6) was the loser.
Ciego de Avila, current monarch, was victim of Villa Clara´s overwhelming offensive and lost 2-6 at Augusto César Sandino ballpark, in a game where Vladimir Garcia (10-2) took the loss, while Yaifredo Domínguez (1-6) reached the win and Yasmany Hernandez earned the save (7).
So far, Matanzas appears on top of the standings (46-4), followed by Ciego de Avila (33-17), Granma (30-20), Villa Clara (29-21), Holguin (27-23) and Camaguey (25-25) in a contest where the top four sides will advance to semifinals.
