HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 12 (acn) The imminent participation of 12 women in the Argentina Super League and the arrival in China of the men's team stand out by these days in the panorama of Cuban basketball.
As reflected in the website of the Argentine tournament and confirmed by the Caribbean national commission, the Cuban women were distributed among the eight teams registered for the second edition of it, starting next Saturday.
The site announces that as part of the draw, forward Leidys Oquendo, 33 and 1.80 meters height, was chosen for Atletico Talleres de Paraná by Coach Cristian Gomez as the first of the two foreign players permitted per squad.
That club also chose pivot Yuniesky Bouly (23, 1.84m) in round where two Ecuadorian and as many Uruguayans were also drawn.
The other Cuban players are enrolled in the sides Estrella de Berisso (Anisleidy Galindo and Leanyi Bécquer), Berazategui (Marlene Cepeda), Tomás de Rocamora (Edith Thompson and Lisdeyvi Martínez), Libertad (Anay Gracia), Obras (Arlenis Romero), Unión Florida (Fransy Ochoa and Anilegna Colas Ortega) and Lanús (Dairis Tornell).
The contest has three stages (regular, semi-finals and Final Four) and awards two seats to the Women´s South American Club Championships which was won last year by Union Florida.
Meanwhile it became known that a Cuban men´s side coached by Yoannis Zaldivar left for warm-up matches until October 31st against teams from Canada, United States and China.
Without several of its experienced members by being playing in foreign leagues, the group consists of Yasser Rodriguez (CAV), Osmel Oliva (HAV), Karel Guzman (HAV), Yuniskiel Molina (MTZ), William Granda (CAV), Yoanki Messiah (SSP). Yoel Cubilla (VCL), Freddy Marlins (HAV), Luis Germán Clark (CAV), Eliecer Quintana (PRI), Carlos Villegas (CMG) and Mario Luis Troyano (SSP).
