Cuban GM opens with win in Spanish Team Championship

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 27 (acn) Cuban Leinier Dominguez defeated Ukrainian Yury Krivoruchko at the start of the Spanish Team Championship Honor Division (CECLUB by its Spanish acronym) held in Aragon community.

Dominguez (2720 Elo points), who plays for the Sestao Naturgas Energia, which appears second in the standings, won over his rival (2693) in 54 moves of a Queen´s pawn opening.

It was also the 11th consecutive game without losing for Dominguez, unbeaten at the World Chess Olympiad earlier this month, where he won a silver medal at the first board.

However, his win was not enough because his team tied 3.5 to 3.5 after two wins and three draws per side.

According to the website of the local federation, Sestao´s other winner was Hungarian Richard Rapport (2752), victimizer of Croatian Ivan Saric (2668), while the losers were the hosts Francisco Vallejo (2716) and Sabrina Vega (2411).

In the Equigoma Casa Social Catolica, which also matched to 3.5 with the Gros Xake Taldea, there is also Cuban presence through GM Yuniesky Quesada (2634), who drew with Azeri Arkadij Naiditsch (2696) in 47 moves of a Spanish opening.

The only winning squad in this first round was the Jaime Casas, which beat 4-3 the VTI Atocha, while the Magic Extremadura and the Solvay also signed peace (3.5 to 3.5).

This is a seven-round contest that requires the teams to include at least one woman in each series.

Today´s pairings are Sestao-Extremadura, Xake Taldea-Merida, Atocha-Equigoma and Jaime Casas-Solvay.
