HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 27 (acn) Villa Clara defeated Holguin 8-7 to escape from the sweep in the subseries and regain third place in the standings, in the continuation of the Cuban baseball championship in its 56th edition.
In match held at Holguin´s Calixto Garcia Park, Villa Clara was losing by a run in the ninth inning when first baseman Norel González blasted a home run to right field with a teammate on base off the loser Meracles Ruben Oris.
Gonzalez led his team attack when batting 4 for 4 with three RBIs, seconded by two RBIs per capita by third baseman Yeniet Perez and catcher Yulexis La Rosa, the latter also homered, while Yasmany Hernandez earned his third win of the season.
In yesterday´s other results, Artemisa beat Ciego de Avila 4-2, Industriales won 4-3 over Pinar del Río, Cienfuegos defeated 1-0 Camagüey, Sancti Spiritus overcame 6-2 Mayabeque, and Granma and Isla de la Juventud emerged victorious, with the same score (7-6), over Las Tunas and Santiago de Cuba, in that order, while Matanzas and Guantanamo suspended their game.
After these outcomes, Matanzas leads the national baseball classic with 34 wins and only three losses, escorted by Ciego de Avila (24-15), Villa Clara (21-13), Holguin (21-14), Granma (22-16), Guantanamo (21-17), Industriales (21-17), Las Tunas (19-18), Camagüey (19-19), Isla de la Juventud (17-19), Pinar del Río (14-19), Cienfuegos (16-23), Artemisa (15-24), Santiago de Cuba (12-26), Sancti Spiritus (12-26) and Mayabeque (8-27).
