SANTA CLARA, Cuba, Sep 22 (acn) Villa Clara baseball fans, along with representatives from different bodies, will come together today at Augusto Cesar Sandino stadium, in this city, for the official farewell of Ariel Pestano.
Considered by many as the best catcher of all time in Cuba, Pestano says goodbye to active sports, while acknowledging that he still had much to give.
Previously, similar ceremonies were held in the municipalities of Caibarien, his home town, and Sagua la Grande.
Mauricio Aviles, an official of the National Institute of Sports Physical Education and Recreation, told ACN that the ceremony will start at 7 pm, and then it will take place the match Villa Clara-Santiago de Cuba.
This time Pestano will receive recognitions from different organizations and agencies, in addition to the affection and love of Villa Clara people.
Official data report that Pestano played during 22 seasons at the highest level in the national baseball classic, as well as being starting catcher of Cuban national team for more than a decade.
In National Series, Pestano caught 459 runners and only 353 managed to steal him a base, for excellent effectiveness of 56.5 percent and made 78 errors in more than 8 300 putouts, for a high defensive average of 991.
Offensively, he had an acceptable BA of .287, product of 1 532 in 5 339 at-bats, with 302 doubles, 33 triples and 153 home runs, in addition to 905 RBIs.
Fans of this province say goodbye to the catcher who gave them back joy when in 2013, after a sensational home run, he managed to regain the title of national champions, after 18 failed attempts.
In an interview granted to ACN, Pestano said he was willing to take responsibilities within the provincial team, to pass on his knowledge and experiences and take the squad to the top of the podium again.
