HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 16 (acn) Industriales broke Matanzas´ chain of 18 consecutive wins when beating them 6-5 in the continuation of the Cuban baseball championship in its 56th edition.
The squad from Havana city guaranteed the success in the tenth inning thanks to decisive homer by Joasán Guillen, in match won by reliever Eddy Abel Garcia, who allowed three hits in three innings to earn his fourth win of the season.
Guillen was the offensive highlight for the winners along with first baseman Javier Camero as they both drove in two runs per capita in the game, while catcher Ariel Martinez batted 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Matanzas Crocodiles.
Matanzas suffered only its third loss of the season with 27 wins and seamlessly leads the national baseball classic, seven games ahead of Holguin, which match versus Camaguey was suspended by rain.
The current monarch, the Ciego de Avila Tigers, knocked out 10-0 Isla de la Juventud, with the seventh win of the season for right-hander Vladimir Garcia, who only allowed three hits and struck out seven rivals in seven innings, and was backed up by homers of Eliecer Griñán (2) and Luis Robert Moirán (1).
But later, the Isla de la Juventud Pirates won the second game of this double program with score of 8-4, with homers of Dainier Galvez and Leonardo Urgellés, and Adrian Caraballo took the win, while Ruben Valdes also homered by the Tigers.
Robert Luis Delgado blasted a home run and outfielder Ariel Benavides hit a double and drove in three runs in the 12-1 knockout of Guantánamo over Villa Clara, with the sixth win of the campaign to Dayron Alexis Riera.
In the other games of the day, Granma knocked out 12-0 Cienfuegos, Las Tunas beat 10-5 Artemisa, Pinar del Rio defeated 3-2 Mayabeque and Santiago de Cuba won 4-2 over Sancti Spiritus.
After these results, Matanzas (27-3) commands the standings of Cuban baseball, escorted by Holguin (18-8), Ciego de Avila (18-12), Camagüey (16-12), Villa Clara (14-11), Guantanamo (16-14), Granma (15-14), Las Tunas and Industriales (14-15), Isla de la Juventud (13-14), Cienfuegos (13-17), Pinar del Río (10-14), Santiago of Cuba (11-18), Artemisa (11-19), Mayabeque (8-19) and Sancti Spiritus (8-21).
