Matanzas unstoppable in Cuban baseball

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 13 (acn) Matanzas kept its unstoppable pace and added its 17th victory in line when beating Industriales 6-5 in the continuation of the Cuban baseball championship.

Yordanis Samon and Jefferson Delgado drove in two runs per capita to lead the offensive of the Matanzas Crocodiles, with reliever Javier Del Pino as winner and the second save by Adrian Sosa, while Ramon Pena homered for the losing side.
With this result, Matanzas ratified itself on top of the national baseball classic with near-perfect balance of 26 wins and only two losses, 10 victories short to match the record of 27 consecutive wins set by Mineros in 1972.
Meanwhile, Holguin was consolidated in the second seat of the standings by beating 3-2 Camaguey, with the fifth win of the season for starting pitcher Meracles Ruben Oris, who allowed six hits and two earned runs in five innings, supported by save of Carlos Alberto Leon.
The reigning monarch Ciego de Avila overcame 10-9 Isla de la Juventud with three RBIs per capita to Yoelvis Fiss and Abdel Civil in match won by Yunser Corrales, while rookie Gerardo Casi blasted a homer and drove in three runs for the losers.
Villa Clara suffered its third consecutive defeat after losing 2-5 to Guantanamo, with Julio Pablo Martinez hitting 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs to support the win of Pedro Enrique Aguero, who allowed six hits and two earned runs in six and two third innings.
In the other matches of the day, Santiago de Cuba beat 7-6 Sancti Spiritus, Granma won 8-4 over Cienfuegos, and the games Pinar del Rio-Mayabeque and Las Tunas-Artemisa were suspended by rain.
Matanzas (26-2) smoothly leads the national baseball classic, escorted by Holguin (17-8), Ciego de Avila (17-11), Camagüey (16-11), Villa Clara (13-10), Guantanamo (15-13), Granma and Industriales (13-14), Isla de la Juventud (12-13), Cienfuegos (13-15), Las Tunas (12-14), Pinar del Río (9-14) Artemisa (10-17), Santiago de Cuba (10-17), Mayabeque (8-18) and Sancti Spiritus (7-20).
