Cuban women outperform men in Baku Chess Olympiad

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 13 (acn) Cuban women´s and men´s teams ranked 18th and 25th in the just concluded 42nd Chess Olympiad held at Baku, capital of Azerbaijan.

According to the website of the contest, the Caribbean women´s side had an amazing final round as they beat 3-1 Croatia, with highlight for Maritza Arribas, who remained unbeaten all along the tournament, and Lisandra Llaudy, who won their games, while Yaniet Marrero and Oleiny Linares drew their matches.
Arribas, Llaudy and Oleiny Linares charged with the weight of their team as they contributed with 6.5, 7 and 6 points, in that order, and the first and second of them earned 19.2 and 7.8 units to their ELO coefficient.
The women section of the tourney was won by China, which totaled 20 points, and was escorted by Poland (17) and Ukraine (17), while the Cuban squad finished 18th with 15 units.
Meanwhile, in the final round of the open section, Cubans drew 2-2 with Romania, outcome that included a win by Leinier Dominguez, draws of Yuniesky Quesada and Isan Ortiz and a costly loss by Yuri Gonzalez.
Dominguez starred a superb performance in the event as he finished undefeated, 5 wins and 5 draws, totaled 7.5 points, added 15.6 units to his ELO and was awarded silver medalist of the first board.
United States topped the standings in this section with 20 points, same amount of Ukraine but Americans had better tiebreaker, and Russia (18) finished third.
