Cuba: Bronze Medal, Record and Injury at Paralympics in Rio

Cuba: Bronze Medal, Record and Injury at Paralympics in RioHAVANA, Cuba, Sep 13 (acn) A bronze medal by Noralvis De Las Heras, a record by Omara Durand and the injury suffered by athlete Yunidis Castillo marked the island's performance on Sunday at the 15th Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the JIT sports publication, De Las Heras finished third in the women's discus throwing F-44 event, with 32.47 meters, at the Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium. The gold and silver medals went to Juan Yao, with a world record of 44.53 meters, and Yue Yang (43.47), both of them from China.
Durand set a new Paralympic record in her semifinal heat with 23.67 seconds in the women's 200 meters T-12, for which she now totals four records, three of them on the way to the title she won in the 100 meters dash.
W hat happened to the five-time Paralympic champion Castillo in the final of the women's 100m T-47 was really unfortunate, since she had to slow down her pace when leading in the first 15 or 20 meters, which prevented her from reediting the crown obtained in London 2012.
This situation could complicate her participation in the 200 and 400 meter races, events she also won in the British capital four years ago.
Castillo gave Cuba its first medal in the 2016 Paralympics after finishing second in the long jump F-47 event, with a 5.59 meter record.
So far, the Caribbean island totals two gold, one silver and five bronze medals, still distant from the booty achieved in London 2012 (9-5-3).
