RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Aug 19 (acn) The Cuban pair of Serguey Torres and Fernando Dayan Jorge advanced today to the finals of the men´s C-2 1000 meters in the canoeing competitions of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games taking place in this Brazilian city.
The Cuban duet won their semifinal heat with time of 3: 40,192 minutes, ahead of Uzbeks Gerasim Kochnev and Serik Mirbekov (3: 40,772), and Russians Ilia Shtokalov and Ilya Pervukhin (3: 42,127), who also guaranteed their presence in the medals discussion, scheduled for Saturday.
The Ukrainian duo Dmytro Ianchuk-Taras Mishchuk (3: 38,384) led the second semifinal heat, escorted by Czechs Jaroslav Radon- Filip Dvorak (3: 42,166) and Hungarians Henrik Vasbanyai- Robert Mike (3: 56,126).
The lists of crews qualified to the final also includes the German duo of Sebastian Brendel-Jan Vandrey and Brazilians Erlon de Souza Silva and Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos, leaders of the two preliminary heats with times of 3: 33,482 and 3: 33,269 minutes respectively.
Cubans Torres and Jorge reached the semifinal stage when finishing second in their qualifying heat with time of 3: 34,939 minutes, only surpassed by Germans Brendel and Vandrey.
Cuba was also present today at Rio 2016 canoeing tournament in the men´s kayak (K-1) 200 meters event through Fidel Antonio Vargas, who was eliminated after concluding seventh in his preliminary series with time of 35,561 seconds.
