Cuban track cyclists to compete in Rio next Saturday

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Aug 11 (acn) Although track cycling will begin on Thursday, Cubans Lisandra Guerra and Marlies Mejías will be in action on Saturday and Monday, respectively, in the new Olympic Park velodrome in this city.

Guerra will debut at 10 am in the first round of the keirin event in search of a ticket to the next phase, which will be in the afternoon session as a prelude to the grand finale.
I prefer the individual speed, but actually I´ve had good results in this event, Guerra told JIT sports publication, committed to improve her performance in London 2012, where she was eliminated.
In the speed event she was ninth in Beijing 2008 and sixth four years ago, when she was about to be among the four finalists, but she was beaten by Chinese Shuang Guo, who finished third.
On Sunday, Guerra will start her participation on the speed event, which final phase will be a day later.
I know the challenge is tough in either of the two events; however I think with the maturity I have acquired, I'm ready for this kind of major endeavors, "she said.
Meanwhile, Marlies will compete in omnium on August 15 and 16, and for her it will also be hard to improve the eighth seat in which she finished in London 2012, but like her compatriot she intends to give her best in the 250-meter oval built for the occasion.
The other track cycling events of these Olympic Games are team speed and pursuit, both for both sexes.
The most outstanding result of Cuba in Olympics is the silver medal won by Yoanka Gonzalez in Beijing 2008.
