RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Aug 3 (acn) The General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially announced today in this Brazilian city the inclusion of baseball in the program of the Games of Tokyo 2020, based in Japan.
The highest entity of world Olympism unanimously approved the return of baseball to this sort of events, along with women's softball, and opened the doors to four new sports: surf, karate, rock climbing and skateboard.
After appearing five times continuously on the Olympic program since Barcelona 1992 to Beijing 2008, baseball was removed from the multisport contest of London 2012.
With the inclusion of these five sports -surfing, karate, rock climbing and skateboard will make their first Olympic appearance-, plus the other 28 present in the program of Rio de Janeiro 2016, the edition of Tokyo 2020 will feature 33 disciplines in its program.
These five competitive modalities were proposed by the organizing committee of Tokyo 2020 after completion of a selection in which sports such as squash, bowling and wushu, a Chinese martial art, were rejected.
The aim of IOC with these five new sports is combining very popular disciplines in the host country, such as baseball and karate, with others that attract a young audience, such as rock climbing, surfing and skateboarding.
Cuba won the baseball event in the editions of Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004, and finished second in the editions of Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008.
IOC approved the inclusion of two new sports, rugby sevens and golf, for the calendar of the 2016 Olympics, from August 5 to 21 in this Brazilian city.
