Cuban gymnasts participate in World Challenge Cup

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 23 (acn) As part of their training, the three Cuban gymnasts qualified to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games will attend, from tomorrow until Sunday, the 2016 Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup, in Anadia, Portugal.

The Cuban representation, consisting of the world runner-up, Manrique Larduet, Randy Leru and Marcia Videaux, will take the European event as training toward the Olympics, said Pedro Pablo Barrios, national commissioner of this sport.

According to JIT sports publication, Larduet will participate in rings, pommel horse, horizontal bar and parallel bars, latter event where he will try a new routine with higher degree of difficulty, in order to perfect his presentation at the Olympics.

Larduet, Cuban hope of medals for the first time in the Olympic Games, will not be present for this occasion in the events of floor and vault, since he is not entirely trained for them and we preferred not to take risks, his coach, Carlos Gil, told JIT.

Also, his teammates, Leru and Videaux, will also comply with a specific training plan, which includes new routines and perfecting the ones they already incorporated into their repertoires towards Rio de Janeiro.

In the previous edition (2015), Manrique won titles in horizontal bar, vault and floor, and won the silver medal in parallel bars and rings, while Marcia climbed to the top of the podium in vault and earned a bronze medal on uneven bars.

This contest of Anadia will be attended by 173 gymnasts, of both sexes, representing 41 countries, including several major figures, who will also be present in the Olympics, next August.
