Key West-Havana rally begins Monday

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 20 (acn) A 13-yacth fleet and a sail boat from the Key West Club in the U.S. will arrive Monday at Havana´s Hemingway Marina as part of the Key West-Havana Rally.

The fleet and other boats from the Hemingway International Yacht Club will visit the Havana Bay Wednesday morning to later sail along the Havana sea front drive on their way back to the Hemingway marina, according to Granma newspaper.

The event will pay the way to sign a friendly agreement between the Key West Yacht Club, Cuban Aviation clubs and the Hemingway International Yacht Club in order to strengthen current collaboration relations.

The accord signing will be preceded by the arrival at Havana´s Jose Marti airport of three airplanes from the air division of the Key West club.

And on June 24, eight yachts and eight sail boats are scheduled to arrive at Havana waters as part of a rally to Cuba by the Texas Mariners Cruising Association.

That fleet will concentrate in front of Havana´s Morro Castle at the mouth of the bay on June 26 in what has been considered an unprecedented event.

Meanwhile, this year´s program with the US nautical community includes the Havana World Record Challenge, during which Key West Club member James Dennoyer will try to set a speed record of less than an hour in a trip between Key West and Havana.

Dennoyer will use a boat specially designed for his objective, capable of reaching over 100 miles an hour.

Last August, German Roger Kluh crossed the strait in one hour 30 minutes on board his boat Apache Star.
