Nine Cubans to fight for gold medals in Cordova Cardin boxing tournament

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 2 (acn) A total of nine Cubans advanced and four of them will fight today against foreign boxers qualified to the Olympics in Rio in the final day of the Cordova Cardin boxing tournament, hosted by the Havana Sports City Coliseum.

The evening includes long-awaited bouts such as that of the super heavyweights Yoandry Toirac and the world champion French Tony Yoka and the one between Armando Martinez and Brazilian Robson Conceiçao, universal silver and bronze medalist, in light welterweight division.
Toirac reached the final when winning by forfeit over Costa Rican Josué Morera and Yoka beat 3-0 the local Jose Angel Larduet in semifinals.
Martinez defeated 3-0 the former national champion Darieskis Palmero, while Conceiçao won by forfeit over French Sofiane Oumiha.
The other two hosts who will fight against boxers already qualified to Rio de Janeiro are the welterweight Antonio Bisset, who beat 2-1 Guatemalan Lester Martinez and cruiser Frank Sanchez, victimizer 2-0 of his teammate Herich Ruiz.
Bisset will have a tough hurdle in Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre, 2013 world bronze medalist, who defeated 3-0 Brazilian Roberto Queiroz.
While Sanchez's rival will be Frenchman Paul Omba, winner by forfeit over Juan Nogueira, another Brazilian.
The closing evening also promises attractions based on fights between Cubans, including that of light welterweights Andy Cruz and Kevin Brown and featherweights Javier Ibáñez and Frank Zaldivar.
Altogether, Cuba will have 12 contestants in the final, Brazil (3), France (2), and the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and China one per capita.
