HAVANA, Cuba, May 20 (acn) Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon will try from next week to earn a ticket to the 2017 World Chess Cup when competing in the continental tournament in El Salvador.
The latter contest will be held at the International Center for Fairs and Conventions at the Salvadoran capital and will grant four berths to the WC which is planned for Georgia.
Bruzon, 2 679 Elo points, tops the updated ranking list of the 48 attendees, including his compatriots and also GMs Isan Ortiz (2578) and Yuri Gonzalez (2555), ninth and twelfth, in that order.
The second Cuban player, according to the world ranking, reigned at that level in 2005 and 2011 and is favorite again without forgetting the rank of other GMs as Argentine Sandro Mareco (2625), defending champion, Venezuelan Eduardo Iturrizaga (2624) and American Aleksandr Lenderman (2618).
Peruvian Emilio Cordova (2602), Argentina's Diego Flores (2592) and Chilean Ivan Morovic (2573), usual participants of these competitions, were also announced by the organizers on their official website.
In total there will be 11 rounds by the Swiss system starting on Saturday, May 28 th and two double-round days.
The Cuban players will then return home for the Capablanca Memorial tournament, to be held in Varadero resort from June 8 to 20, as the last evaluable test for entering the Olympic teams.
