HAVANA, Cuba, May 18 (acn) Seven Cubans, four women and three men, will attend from May 18 to 22 the Pan American Road Cycling Championships, to be held in the Venezuelan state of Táchira.
The women's squad includes the continental multi-champion Arlenis Sierra, Marlies Mejias, Iraida Garcia and the experienced Yumari Gonzalez, and the first three of them have great possibilities to obtain necessary points to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games (Brazil).
According to JIT sports publication, the four Cubans will try to be included among the 67 competitors qualified to the Olympics in coming August.
It specifies that the first 62 athletes will earn their qualification according to their seats in the world ranking, while three others will make it through the list of America, Asia and Africa, while Brazil has two tickets secured given its status as host.
Meanwhile, the three-man squad attending the South American city includes Onel Santa Clara, Jans Carlos Arias and Frank Consuegra, with the latter with greater options to earn a ticket to Rio.
The race for the Olympic berth will end on May 31 and one day later the International Cycling Union (UCI by its French acronym) will announce to the NOCs the number of seats obtained, while on July 15 they must ratify their use, and vacant seats will be reallocated from July 7 to 17, added JIT.
