Cuba secures 16 berths for Rio ParalympicsHAVANA, Cuba, May 18 (acn) Cuba has already secured 16 seats for the Paralympics Games in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled to take place from September 7 to 18 in this Brazilian city, a figure that could be around 25.

According to the latest communication offered by JIT digital site, athletics leads the list with seven tickets, including Omara Durand, Yunidis Castillo, Leinier Savón and Leonardo Diaz.

The judokas Dalidaivis Rodriguez, Gerardo Rodriguez, Jorge Hierrezuelo, Yordani Fernandez and Yangaliny Jimenez, swimmers Lorenzo Perez and Yunerki Ortega, and weightlifters Leidys Rodriguez and Oníger Drake will also be at the Paralympics.

As part of the preparation, five Cuban handicapped athletes will participate from May 19 to 21 at the Loterias CAIXA meeting, based in Rio de Janeiro.

The small delegation is led by the sprinters and Olympic champions Durand and Castillo, who will compete in the women's 100, 200 and 400 meters, in the categories T12 and T47, respectively.

It also stand out Savon ,world champion in Doha, Qatar, in men's T12 100 and 200 meters, the Beijing 2008 Paralympic holder, Luis Manuel Galano, in men's T13 400m, jumpers Daineris Mijans (T12) and Yohannis Ballast (T12), and Valeris Larrondo men's T12. 400 and 800 meters.

JIT added that the tournament will take place at Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium, and is considered as a test event prior to the quadrennial sports festival for handicapped athletes.

Cuba registered an outstanding performance at London 2012 Paralympics, where it won nine gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
