HAVANA, Cuba, May 13 (acn) Yoandry Iriarte, only Cuban fencer qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, will compete in the Grand Prix of Moscow, Russia, from May 27 to 28, with the intention of improving positions in the world ranking.
According to the digital site of Radio Havana Cuba, www.radiohc.cu, Iriarte will leave early next week to Europe accompanied by his coach, Jorge Alfonso Perdomo, looking for the necessary warm-up with the world elite.
His European tour will start with a training base in Italy, prior to his first foray into a Grand Prix tournament.
To Yoandry, staying on Italian soil will be very helpful given the high competitive level of fencers from that nation.
Alhadis Bandera, national commissioner of the sport, told ACN that Iriarte will also be present in the Pan American Championships of that discipline that Panama will host from June 20 to 27.
He added that Iriarte will be the only Cuban enrolled in that continental tournament, and they hope to attend other warm-up competitions prior the Olympics.
The Cuban saber fencer earned the ticket for the summer event through the silver medal he won in the Americas qualifying tournament with stage in San Jose, Costa Rica, last April, in an event attended by 15 contestants.
