Women's foil event open Havana´s Grand Prix

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 11 (acn) The traditional Villa de la Habana Fencing Grand Prix, which will run until March 13, will start today through the knockout stage of the women's foil event.

The Gerardo Abreu Fontan Social Club will host the first competitive day of the strong competition, in which more than 110 women from 30 countries participate, including seven Cubans.
The favorite fencers of this event are Italian Elisa Di Francisca -second in the universal standings, winner of the 2015 edition and London 2012 Olympic monarch; in addition to her compatriot Arianna Errigo (3).
That list also includes the prestigious Russian Inna Deriglazova, world ranking leader and silver medalist last year, along with her countrywomen Aida Shanaeva (5) and Larisa Korobeynikova (8).
Americans Lee Kieffer (6) and Nzingha Prescod (7) as well as French Ysaora Thibus (4) will also be major contestants of the event.
For Cuba, Elizabet Hidalgo (125) appears as the best placed in the list of the world in an event in which the main objective for local athletes will be accessing to the round of 64 and earn points for the world ranking.
