HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 29 (acn) The Cuban baseball championship will held from today its last subseries of the regular schedule, with two teams already secured to postseason and three other sides with options of advancing to that stage.
With just three games left, without counting the pending matches, only Matanzas and Ciego de Avila have guaranteed their presence in the decisive phase of the domestic baseball classic, while Pinar del Rio , Industriales and Holguin are struggling for the remaining tickets.
After getting its playoffs ticket clast Friday, the Matanzas Crocodiles climbed to the top of the standings with 51 wins and 29 losses when beating 4-0 Industriales on Saturday, to complete the sweep in the subseries.
Also on Saturday, the Ciego de Avila Tigers (51-31) became the second team with passport to the playoffs after defeating twice Las Tunas, with 9-4 and 4-0 scores.
Meanwhile, Pinar del Río (50-30) lost 5-4 to Isla de la Juventud ( 40-41), and although it has virtually assured its presence in the semifinals, it can still be reached by Holguin
(46-37), which beat Granma 3-2.
Holguin's best options lie in reaching Industriales (48-35), which ranks fourth, last one with the right to intervene in the postseason, with two games difference ahead of them.
With only three games left, Matanzas ( 51-29) leads the Cuban baseball championship, followed by Pinar del Río (50-30), Ciego de Avila (51-31), Industriales (48-35), Holguín (46-37), Las Tunas (42-41), Isla de la Juventud (40-41) and Granma (41-43).
Today Industriales will receive Pinar del Rio and Ciego de Avila will host Holguin in two attractive subseries, vital to define the destiny of the standings, while Matanzas will face Isla de la Juventud and Las Tunas will rival Granma.
