HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 5 (acn) Cuba added its second defeat in the Santo Domingo 2016 Caribbean Baseball Series, in this city, when losing 12-1 to Puerto Rico, compromising thus its chances of advancing to the semifinals.
Puerto Rican side the Santurce Cangrejeros scored early twice off Cuban starting pitcher Wilber Perez in the second inning, runs driven in by Jorge Padilla and Rene Garcia.
On top of the third, Cuban relievers Livan Moinelo and Dachel Duquesne allowed five runs , three of them driven in by Kennys Vargas´ homer.
Puerto Rico added three more runs in the seventh inning, this time against Yaifredo Dominguez, 4th pitcher used by Cuban head coach Roger Machado.
Puerto Rico put final figures on the scoreboard with two runs in the ninth against a Cuban team visibly disarmed in the mental order.
The win went to Andrew Barbosa, who only allowed one earned run and two hits to his rivals.
Without forgetting the poor performance of the offensive yesterday, so far the Achilles heel of the Cuban team is the poor performance of its pitching staff, which has allowed 21 runs in 18 innings.
The Ciego de Avila Tigres, representative of Cuba, now has two losses and no win and shares the last seat of the standings with the local squad of the Dominican Republic, while Mexico leads with 3-0, followed by Venezuela (2-1) and Puerto Rico (1 -1).
For today's game against Venezuela, it is an open question whether there will be further changes in the lineup, nor the potential starters are known, because the Cuban coach refused to attend the press conference after the match.
