HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 2 (acn) With an eye on the Olympic classification and preparation, the Cuban men's gymnastics squad will have a training base in Mexico from February 7 to March 8.
The double world medalist Larduet Manrique, only Cuban with the ticket assured for Rio de Janeiro 2016 (Brazil), and Randy Leru will train in Mexican lands under the tutelage of seasoned coach Carlos Gil, the latter exclusively told ACN.
This training camp will be essential specifically for Leru, who will try to get the ticket to the Brazilian event, an option he will have on the Olympic qualifying tournament in Rio de Janeiro city itself, from April 16 to 24, added the coach.
After their stay in Mexico, Cubans will participate in the World Cup in Qatar, from March 24 to 26, in which Larduet will present a new element in parallel bars, recently included during the training base that ended on January 16, in Costa Rica.
Gil added that this training is focused primarily on Leru, although he will not go to the World Cup in Croatia (April 28-May 1), event only attended by Larduet, while Randy will stay in Cuba for rest, presumably with the Olympic ticket already in his pockets.
Recently, the legendary Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci widely praised Manrique, leading exponent of the discipline in Cuba, to whom she said he had all the conditions to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, even to defeat the outstanding Japanese Kohei Uchimura.
"I think he can be an Olympic champion, because he is very close to the number one. Everyone says Uchimura is the God of gymnastics, because he does it everything exactly, with extreme accuracy, but competition is competition and he has to continue training every day, he just need to have a good day, "Comaneci stated.
