HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 18 (acn) Ciego de Ávila increased its lead at the top of the standings of Cuban baseball championship by beating Industriales 10-1, result used by Granma to equalize in the second seat.
Yoelvis Fiss and Abdel Civil drove in three runs per capita to lead Ciego de Avila's offensive and Dachel Duquesne achieved his fifth win of the season when allowing five hits and one earned run in six innings.
Stayler Hernandez took off a solo homer for the defeated, while veteran Norberto Gonzalez took the loss by allowing six hits and five runs in six innings, plus four walks.
Granma took advantage of Industriales´ loss and now they appeared tied in second seat of the tournament when defeating 4-3 Pinar del Rio, with the fifth win of the campaign for the undefeated lefty Leandro Martínez, supported by Juan Ramón Olivera´s seventh save.
Roel Santos went 2 for 4 with a homer to lead the offensive of Granma, seconded by second baseman Carlos Benitez and outfielder Dayron Blanco, who drove in two runs each.
Matanzas beat 2-1 Holguin, highlighting the solid pitching performance of the ace Freddy Asiel Alvarez –coming from Villa Clara to strengthen the staff of the Crocodiles, who only allowed five hits and one unearned run in six innings and two thirds of work.
Finally, Las Tunas knocked out 10-0 the current runner-up Isla de la Juventud, in match marked by outstanding performance from starter Yudiel Rodriguez –who only allowed three hits in seven innings, and offensive highlight of Vismay Santos, author of a homer and two RBIs.
Ciego de Avila leads the Cuban baseball championship with balance of 33-13, three and a half games ahead of Granma and Industriales (30-17), which precede in the standings to Pinar del Rio (28-18), Matanzas and Las Tunas (28-19), Holguin ( 26-21) and Isla de la Juventud (25-22).
