Pinar del Rio beats Cuban defending baseball championHAVANA, Cuba, Dec 3 (acn) Pinar del Rio beat 7-0 the leader and current monarch Ciego de Avila to achieve its fourth consecutive win in the continuation of the pending matches of the first round of the Cuban Baseball Championship.

Erlis Casanova reached his fifth win of the season by pitch ing nine innings with 10 strikeouts and allowed only six hits, while Denis Castillo took the loss when allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs.

First baseman William Saavedra led the offensive of the winners by hitting 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs, seconded by outfielder Julio Alberto Leon, author of two RBIs.

With this victory, Pinar del Rio now has balance of 27 wins and 15 losses, only surpassed in the standings by Ciego de Avila (30-13) and Industriales ( 30-14).
They still have two pending matches against Ciego de Avila and Industriales to complete the preliminary phase.

The match between Matanzas and Las Tunas will be the last one of the qualifying stage pending games on December 5, to make way for the choosing of reinforcements and the All-Star Game, agreed on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 of the coming month at Julio Antonio Mella stadium in Las Tunas.

The second round of the Cuban Baseball Championship will begin on December 15 and will run until March 6 next year, with the obligatory stop for the participation of the monarch Ciego de Avila in the 2016 Caribbean Series in Santo Domingo.
