Cuban thri-athletes to depart for the Dominican RepublicHAVANA, Cuba, Nov 18 (acn) Led by Michel Gonzalez, a group of four Cuban athletes will depart on Sunday to the Dominican Republic for a training base and to participate in the Santo Domingo 1st International Triathlon.

Besides Gonzalez, the group is made up by Conrado Martinez, Ana Leydis Arias and Leslie Amat, all involved in a period of preparation for next year's competitions, Alejandro Puerto, National Commissioner of the sport, told ACN.

The first edition of the Dominican event, described as one of the most important in the region due to the confirmation of many of the main athletes of the area , about 500 are confirmed to date, the media in that country said.

Cubans will only compete in the Olympic distance event (1 500 meter swimming, 40 km biking and 10 km running), but the contest will also includes the super sprint (250 m-12 km-2.5 km), the sprint (750m-20 km-5 km) and a rookie event.

Puerto said that the Cuban squad will make a training base for 14 days in the Dominican city, with an eye primarily on the Central American and Caribbean tourney in Puerto Rico and the Havana International Triathlon, to be held in January and February 2016, respectively.

Precisely, the official presentation of the later took place on Monday, which will have a greater number of participants and a better competitive structure to that offered this year in its first edition, the organizers noted.

The press conference was attended by Marisol Casado, president of the International Triathlon Union; Juan Francisco Montalban, Spain's ambassador to Cuba; Juan Carrasco, event organizer, and Rolando Herrera, director of the race.

The meeting was also chaired by Luis Alberto Perez Olivares, CEO of Cubadeportes SA and members of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER by its Spanish acronym).
