HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 27 (acn) Cubans Lazaro Bruzon and Lesly Martinez both won in the opening day of the 6th Ibero-American Individual Chess Championship with a stage in Bilbao , Spain, where it also takes place the Grand Slam Masters Final.
Bruzon , who is seeded third with 2659 Elo points, easily beat the local Miguel Angel Gonzalez (2084) in 37 moves of an English opening, while Lesly (2490) defeated the also host Imanol Segura (1978) , as published by the official digital site of the event.
As expected by their status as favorites, Iberian Francisco Vallejo (2684) and Peruvian Julio Granda (2667) also won over Spanish Daneri Martin (2112) and Venezuelan Johnny Sadusea (2094), respectively.
The tournament is attended by 93 contestants from 17 countries fighting for a crown already won by Bruzon (2006), Granda (2008) and the current champion Paraguayan Axel Bachman ( 2593), who also won yesterday over Spanish Alain Prieto (2081).
There will be played nine rounds by the Swiss system on the Champs Elysees Theatre of Bilbao and today will be the only doubleheader day.
In the Masters Final, American Wesley So (2760) beat Chinese Ding Liren (2782) and former world champion Indian Viswanathan Anand (2803) drew with Dutch Anish Giri (2798).
