HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 8 (acn) Granma is now third in the Cuban baseball championship after completing the sweep on Villa Clara, with a 5-3 victory.
Jose Armando Peña achieved his fourth win of the season when allowing eight hits and three earned runs in eight innings, supported by a save by Ciro Silvino Licea and two RBIs by first baseman Yordanis Samon.
In the other match of the night, Pinar del Rio beat Camagüey 3-1 with offensive highlight to outfielder Yasser Julio Gonzalez who went 2 for 4, including a solo homer, and veteran Vladimir Baños won by allowing four hits and an unearned run in eight innings.
In evening hours, Las Tunas won over Artemisa 3-0, thus achieving its fifth straight win and climbed to fourth seat of the standings, while the surprising team, Cienfuegos, defeated Ciego de Avila, current leader, 19-4, in just five innings.
Also, Isla de la Juventud beat Santiago de Cuba 8-7, Mayabeque won over Guantanamo 6-4 , Holguin defeated Matanzas 6-3 and Sancti Spiritus won against Industriales 6-5.
After these results, Ciego de Avila leads the Cuban baseball tournament with 21 wins and nine games lost, followed by Pinar del Río (19-9), Granma ( 19-10), Las Tunas ( 18-10), Industriales (19- 11), Cienfuegos (15-12), Matanzas (16-13), Sancti Spiritus (16-14), Isla de la Juventud and Holguin (15-15), Guantanamo (14-15), Villa Clara (14-16), Santiago de Cuba (11-19), Artemisa (8-19), Camagüey (8-22) and Mayabeque (5-24).
