HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 18 (acn) Industriales and Ciego de Avila appeared today tied at the top of the Cuban baseball championship after a day marked by swept in five of the eight subseries in dispute.
The most spectacular of those performances went to the account of Industriales over its archrival Santiago de Cuba by winning the third game of the particular match with score of 4-1 and offensive highlight for veteran Alexander Malleta, author of a homer and two RBIs.
Matanzas, Las Tunas, Guantanamo and Holguin were the other squads that swept their respective rivals.
The right-hander Yosvani Perez allowed three hits in five innings to achieve the win of Matanzas 6-5 over Camagüey, with homers to the record of William Luis and Demis Valdes for the cause of the victors.
Las Tunas defeated twice Mayabeque: first 7-6 with Danel Castro hitting 3 for 4 with three RBIs and then 7-1 with highlight to outfielder Jorge Yhonson, author a homer and three RBIs.
Also, Holguin walked off 8-6 Artemisa in the tenth inning in match decided by second baseman Yeison Pacheco with homer, while outfielder Julio Pablo Martinez went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs in the 4-2 victory of Guantanamo over Cienfuegos.
In the other matches of the day, Villa Clara lost 1-3 to Sancti Spiritus in the first of a two-game day, but took revenge in the second by winning 7-1, while Granma and Pinar del Rio suspended by rain in the second inning.
When the initial stage of the National Baseball Series already met the first third of its calendar, the standings shows Ciego de Avila and Industriales tied on its top with 12 wins and only 3 losses, followed by Granma (10-4), Matanzas and Sancti Spiritus (9-6), Pinar del Rio (8-6), Holguin, Guantanamo and Las Tunas (8-7), Villa Clara, Cienfuegos (7-8), Isla de la Juventud, Santiago de Cuba (6-9), Artemisa (5-10), Mayabeque (3-12) and Camaguey (1-14).
