HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 17 (acn) Cuba was invited to participate with six athletes in the World Junior Judo Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, as well as to assist with two others to a training base in Brazil.
Rafael Manso, national commissioner of this martial art, told Jit sports publication that the Asian contest, from October 23 to 27, will be attended by three women and three men, coached by trainers Driulis Gonzalez and Julio Alderete, respectively.
The chosen girls are Vanessa Godinez, in the 44 kilograms, Yurisleidis Hernandez (52 kilos) and Adilaidis Lemus (57), while the boys are Yandri Torres ( 60), Ivan Silva (81) and Jose Barbaro Sotomayor (81).
On the training base, he explained that this Saturday Asley González (90), Olympic silver medalist in London 2012 and world champion in Rio de Janeiro 2013, and Jose Armenteros (100), world silver medalist in Chelyabinsk 2014, together with Coach Justo Noda will be in Salvador de Bahia.
The invitation to Gonzalez and Armenteros is very beneficial for both as they are the main trump cards of the Cuban men's judo team for 2016 Summer Olympics.
Another news is the upcoming visit to Cuba of Marius Vizer, president of the International Judo Federation, as part of the organizational process of the Havana Grand Prix, to be held from January 22 to 24, 2016.
Regarding the Havana tournament, Manso said it will grant points for qualifying to the Rio Olympics, so he expects greater participation of athletes and countries, both from America and other parts of the world.
