Cuban wrestlers make debut at World Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 8 (acn) Cuban Greco-Roman wrestlers Miguel Martinez and Yasmany Lugo will debut today at the World Wrestling Championship, based in Las Vegas, United States.

Martinez, 66 kg , and Lugo (98) will try to give Cuba the first medal in this strong competition, which is expected to be attended by over 650 athletes from 88 countries.

The main result of both Caribbean athletes is the gold medal won at the Veracruz 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.

There are many expectations for tomorrow with the debut of Mijail Lopez ( 130), who will be seeking his sixth title of the world.

Lopez, a native of the province of Pinar del Río, reached the crown in the editions of Budapest 2005, Baku 2007, Herning 2009, Moscow 2010 and Tashkent last year.

His resume also includes the Olympic scepters achieved in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

This contest in Las Vegas will have the added significance of granting five tickets in each division for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Ismael Borrero (59 kg) will also compete for the Caribbean island in the Greco-Roman modality with the intention of qualifying to the summer event.

In freestyle, the team is headed Reineris Salas (86), double world silver medalist; along with Yowlys Bonne (57), Livan Lopez (74) and Javier Cortina (97), also winners of medals at this level, besides the novel Franklyn Marén (65).

In addition, the Cuban representatives among women will be the experienced Katherine Vidiaux (63) and Lisset Echevarria (75).
