Cuban triple jumper finishes second in World Championships

Cuban triple jumper finishes second in World ChampionshipsHAVANA, Cuba, Aug 27 (acn) The Cuban Pedro Pablo Pichardo won the silver medal in the triple jump of the World Athletics Championships based in Beijing, China.

Pichardo reached 17.73 meters, but could not beat American Christian Taylor (18.21), winner of the title with the second best record of all time, according to IAAF website.

Taylor, London 2012 Olympic champion, achieved the gold medal in the sixth attempt and made history with a jump surpassed only by the 18.29 (world record) by British Jonathan Edwards.

However, the Cuba triple jumper again demonstrated his competitive quality and also made his best jump in his last chance, but it was not enough to reach the crown; in an event in which Portuguese Nelson Evora won the bronze medal with 17.52 m.

With this result, Pichardo matched his performance of Moscow 2013.

The Cuban athlete, Pan American champion in Toronto last July, owner of a record of 18.08 meters in the current season, will seek revenge in the 2016 Summer Olympics and the coveted scepter he could not reach now.

This was Cuban third medal at the World Athletics Championships, along with the titles won by discus thrower Denia Caballero and pole vaulter Yarisley Silva.
