Two Cubans to compete today in World Judo Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 24 (acn) Cubans Dayaris Mestre (48 kg) and Yandry Torres (60) will compete today in the first day of the World Judo Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, which is attended by 729 representatives from 120 countries.

According to the website of the contest, Mestre will face Priscilla Morand, from Mauritius, while Torres´ rival will be Houdmed Modjar, from Djibouti.

Carlos Tondique (66) and Yanet Bermoy (52) will debut tomorrow, and Magdiel Estrada (73) and Aliuska Ojeda (57) will start on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ivan Silva (81) and Maricet Espinosa (63) will have their first bout on Thursday and Asley Gonzalez (90), Onix Cortés (70) and Yalennis Castillo (78) will debut on Friday.

Finally, Jose Armenteros (100), Alex Garcia (+100) and Idalis Ortiz (+78) will begin competing on Saturday since the team event will be on Sunday.

The main trump cards of the Caribbean island are Ortiz, London 2012 Olympic champion and world champion in Rio de Janeiro 2013 and Chelyabinsk 2014, and Gonzalez, silver and gold medalist in the British and Russian cities respectively.

But we should also mention to Bermoy, Olympic and world medalist, Cortés and Armenteros, silver medalist in Chelyabinsk, Castillo, Beijing 2008 Olympic runner up, and Estrada (73), who finished second in the Grand Prix of Havana 2014.
