BAYAMO, Cuba, Aug 20 (acn) Heriberto Suarez, director of baseball at the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER by its Spanish acronym), announced in this city, that from next year the structure of the Cuban national series will be changed.
At the meeting for presenting the team of Granma province for the 55th season, the official said that from September 2016 until next January, 16 teams will play for the national title, and then there will be a Super League, with fewer squads and more games.
It's what we thought; but baseball is changing, the scenario is adverse, the challenges are strong, and changes can occur before that; everything depends on the progress of the policy of contracts, and other aspects, he said.
He also stressed that the Cuban people will be duly informed about the subject, considered of great interest in the country.
He recalled that several federations have expressed a desire to hire Cuban players, but the laws of the United States, which forces Cubans to give up their nationality to play in MLB influence on that.
Suarez added that measures will be taken in this 55th National Series, scheduled to begin on August 29, to foster strategic and tactical discipline , good refereeing work, correct behavior of the fans, among others.
He announced for September and October this year a great festival of talents all around the country, in order to attract possible promises of the Cuban national sport.
Finally, he added that from November new materials will be sent for INDER to all provinces to ensure the work aimed at stabilizing the permanent development of baseball.
