HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 20 (acn) Cuban Alberto Juantorena said he was a product of his country, people and Revolution when commenting about his election as Vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)
Juantorena, winner of two gold medals in the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, said he has had the support of a nation that cares about the man, of creating champions with little resources
I am happy to give Cuba back a little of what I received, he said and added his appointment is an acknowledgement to the Cuban sports, that goes beyond any individual achievement.
Juantorena said this was not about him, but about working for the development of the sport of athletics worldwide.
When asked about the election of former rival, British Lord Sebastian Coe, as president of IAAF over Ukrainian Sergey Bubka, he said both were great athletes, with lots of knowledge and good leadership skills.
Budka received 187 to secure a position as first VP, while Qatar´s Dahlan Al Ahmad (159), Cameroon´s Hamad Kalkaba Malboum (115), and Juantorena (111) were elected VPs.
Now it is time to work hard for athletics, said the Cuban.
