HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 3 (acn) Cuba finished fourth in the U-12 World Baseball Championship, based in Taipei of China, by losing 2-0 to Nicaragua in the bronze medal match.
Cuba suffered its second shutout against Nicaragua, this time it was victim of the exquisite performance by pitchers Emilio Rostran and Marcel Villareyna.
Rostran was the winner by allowing four hits and striking out six batters in five innings, and the closer Villareyna achieved the save, while Arturo Mendoza took the loss by allowing two earned runs in four innings and two thirds.
During the first phase of the tournament, Cuba achieved wins over Russia (13-0), Brazil (4-1), South Korea (5-0) and Venezuela (8-2), and a loss to Chinese Taipei (6-5), while in the second round it reached a win against Japan (5-2) and defeats versus Nicaragua (4-0) and USA (6-5).
Moreover, the US team won the crown in the U-12 World baseball championships by beating 7-2 Chinese Taipei in the final match.
